HYDERABAD: The waiver of surcharge on arrears of electricity bills for the period up to November 30, 2005, a facility offered to domestic consumers on clearing these bills, has been extended till June 30. The facility was closed on March 31, 2006. The benefit, however, is applicable only to those consumers whose consumption was below100 units a month during the period from December 2004 to November 2005. According to an estimate, about 47 lakh out of 97 lakh consumers in the domestic sector benefit out of the extension, to the tune of Rs. 219 crores. This decision was taken by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy at a meeting to review power-related matters attended by Transco CMD Rachel Chatterjee. Ms. Chatterjee said later that arrears due from these consumers amounted to at Rs. 755 crores. Of this, the surcharge to be waived on clearing the bills would work out to Rs. 219 crores. The waiver can be claimed on payment of arrears in lump sum or in three equal instalments along with regular bill amounts. Those who filed cases in courts disputing with arrear amounts can also apply, she said.
