College teachers seek withdrawal of GO 35

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Affiliated College Teachers' Association has demanded that the Government withdraw GO 35, which seeks to ban recruitment in aided colleges except filling SC/ST backlog vacant posts.

The Government's move deprives poor students of entering the portals of higher learning, the association said. K. Satyanarayana Rao, president, and G. Sridhar Reddy, general secretary, in a statement on Tuesday described the GO as a "retrograde step". - Special Correspondent

Farmers deplore Minister's remarks

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Ryotu Sangham has threatened to stage a dharna before the residence of Panchayat Raj Minister J.C. Diwakar Reddy if he failed to stop `insulting' farmers by making adverse comments.

K. Ramakrishna, president, and V. Venkayya, general secretary, in a statement on Tuesday referred to the Minister's recent remarks at Madanapalle during `praja patham' and at Chandragiri in the presence of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.- Special Correspondent

Silver seized

ADILABAD : The Mudhole circle police on Tuesday seized 150 kg of silver worth Rs. 30 lakhs and the car in which it was being illegally transported.

According to the police, it was detected at Bidrelli check-post near Bhainsa. The car was coming from Hingoli in Maharashtra.-Staff Reporter

Bear kills man

KURNOOL : In yet another incident of sloth bear attack, a person identified as Ankaiah, 25, died near Ahobilam in Kurnool district on Tuesday.

Ankaiah along with others went into the deep forest for collection of gum when a bear attacked and killed him. - Staff Reporter

Entrance test

VIJAYAWADA: The entrance test for admission to DM/MCh (second PG) medical courses for the year 20006-07 will be conducted at Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad, on May 28 from 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (Dr. NTR-UHS) has invited applications from eligible candidates to appear for the entrance test. Application forms are available at Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad; Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad; and Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam.

Applications should reach the Registrar, UHS, Vijayawada, and the last date for submission of applications is May 13.-Staff Reporter

BSNL engineer trapped

NEW DELHI : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Divisional Engineer, In-charge of Optical Fibre Cable Project, BSNL, Kurnool, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 20,000 from a cable-laying contractor.

The engineer had reportedly promised the contractor to forward his bills for payment besides assuring payment on time and smooth clearance of bills in future. Following the arrest, the CBI carried out searches at his residential premises at Kurnool and recovered assets worth about Rs. 80 lakhs. .-Special Correspondent

Two electrocuted

KHAMMAM: Electric traps laid by poachers for wild animals claimed the lives of two persons in Krishnasagar forests in Aswapuram police station limits on Tuesday.

According to reports, Sunnam Bhimaiah, 60, and T. Venkateswarlu, 27, were electrocuted as they came in touch with live wires. The bodies, allegedly buried in the forests by the poachers, were unearthed by the police. They are on the lookout for the poachers. - Staff Reporter

Depression over Bay

VISAKHAPATNAM : Depression was formed over south-east Bay of Bengal on Tuesday morning, according to a press release by the Cyclone Warning Centre here.

The depression was formed 1,200 km east-south-east of Chennai (or 350 km south-west of Port Blair) and it is likely to intensify further and initially move in a north-westerly direction.

Boy's death: locals stage demonstration

KURNOOL : Residents of Budhawarpet resorted to a protest after a seven-year-old boy Pavan fell into a septic tank and died on Monday night. They alleged that the municipal officials ignored their repeated pleas to close the septic tank pit of the community lavatories. - Staff Reporter

APPC training

TIRUPATI: Andhra Pradesh Productivity Council (APPC) is conducting a training and employment programme for the benefit of educated unemployed youth of Chittoor district. Candidates having SSC (pass/fail), Intermediate, degree, ITI or any diploma qualification can submit their applications on or before April 30 at the SETVEN office here, APPC assistant director C. Inter pass percentage

Srikakulam: The percentage of passes at the Intermediate level in the district was up by more than four percent. The percentage of passes this year was 50.81 as against 46.71 last year. In all 23,408 students had appeared for the examination this year. The Government Junior College in Baruva registered the highest pass percentage (61) in the district. — Special Correspondent

SAAP selection

Srikakulam: The Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP), Srikakulam unit will conduct selection trials for boys and girls (under-19) at the Kodi Ramamurthy stadium here on 30 of this month. VIZIANAGARAM: Vikram Singh Mann took over as Superintendent of Police from Bhavana Saxena, who was transferred and posted as Commandant, A.P.S.P. Battalion, Kakinada, on Monday. Ms. Saxena was felicitated by police and A.P. Police Ministerial Employees at the Police Community Hall. Collector B. Venkateswara Rao and District Judge K. Man, daughter suffer burns

VIZIANAGARAM: Two persons -- Surni Demudu and his daughter Varalakshmi -- suffered burns when five huts caught fire at Bhartavanipalem, a remote village in Neelakantarajapuram panchayat in Vepade mandal on Monday evening. Demudu received burns when he tried to his daughter. The condition of Varalakshmi, admitted in KG Hospital Visakhapatnam, is said to be critical. — Correspondent

Sex workers demand house sites

Kakinada: Sex workers of Peddapuram, under the banner of `WISE' (women's initiative for sustainable empowerment) presented a memorandum to Collector Praveen Prakash during the grievances cell on Monday requesting him to provide house sites and loans to construct houses. They said some of them were given house sites by the previous collector Jawahar Reddy but construction of houses remain a non-starter owing to paucity of funds. — Correspondent

Kakinada: Free training will be given to women in types of paintings -- fabric painting, silk saree painting, glass painting, pot painting -- besides moulding, lamination, ceramic colouring, candle making and soft toy making from April 29 to May 10 at the Sri Ramakrishna Sava samiti auditorium, according to PSRK Thimmajirao secretary of the seva samiti. — Correspondent

Plea to fill teachers'

vacancies

Kakinada: The city unit of the A.P. United Teachers Federation, at its executive meeting here on Tuesday, requested the Government to fill vacant teachers' posts, both in aided and Municipal schools through the DSC-2006.

It also demanded filling of the six panel headmasters posts, inservice B.Ed posts and Grade one Telugu pundits posts in the Municipal corporation limits through the in-service promotions. — Correspondent
