NELLORE: In a bid to contain theft cases during summer season, the district police have decided to convene a meeting with residents' associations in the Municipal Corporation of Nellore. The move is aimed at creating awareness among residents as the local police inspectors will interact with representatives of the residents' associations and in particular, members of the apartment associations to check burglary and house break cases in the city, Superintendent of Police N. Suryanarayana told The Hindu on Tuesday. The meeting will take place within one week. The police will inform association members both the date and venue of the meeting two or three days in advance, the SP said. As the mercury level rises, so do the number of housebreak cases, for a variety of reasons. The prime one being, many families go for outstation trips and some parents take their wards to grandparents' homes during summer holidays. Besides, most of the families prefer sleeping on the terrace in summer due to humid weather conditions. These practices have been leading to a series of thefts during summer despite regular police patrolling and private security guards.
Unsafe practices
Against this backdrop, the police will highlight several unsafe practices being followed by residents. For instance, in several cases, negligence on the part of residents worked to the advantage of professional thieves as they themselves help thieves make easy break-ins by leaving garden tools and other iron implements in the open, he said. The SP said that the local police would give some important tips to prevent burglaries in the meeting.
