KADAPA: Farmers dumped sweet melons (known locally as dosakayalu) on the road at Chapadu in Proddatur constituency on Tuesday and staged rasta roko under the auspices of Bharatiya Janata Party. BJP leader K. Balachandra Reddy, who led the protest demanded that the Government announce a minimum support price for sweet lemons and provide insurance facility for paddy crop, which was damaged by pest infestation in Chapadu mandal. He also sought enhancement of milk procurement price to Rs. 15 a litre.
Traffic disrupted
He said farmers who grew sweet melons were in a quandary, as a bagful of fruits failed to fetch even Rs. 10. The rasta roko led to disruption of traffic on Mydukur-Proddatur route for nearly three hours. The protest was called off following an assurance from the officials to forward their demands to the Government.
