Women traders observe hunger strike

NEW DELHI: Women traders observed a day's hunger strike at Rohini here on Tuesday as part of a relay hunger strike in protest against the ongoing sealing drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The relay hunger strike will shift to Lajpat Nager and G.T. Karnal Road on Wednesday.

Trade organisations are planning to exert pressure on leading political parties to compel the Union Government to resolve the sealing issue. In a statement, the Confederation of All India Traders said there had been an almost 30 per cent decline in the Capital's trade over the past two months.

Inter-school competition

NEW DELHI: A two-day inter-school competition, "Cicero's Challenge 2006'', organised by the Indian Institute of Planning and Management ended here this past weekend. Schools from across the country took part in the festival.

Varun Vaish of Sanskriti School won the debate competition and took home a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh. Other events included quiz, creative writing, choreography, dumb charades, music competition and personality contest. The show ended with a performance by Pakistani musical band Strings.

Ivory Coast delegation calls on Mayor

NEW DELHI: Delhi Mayor Farhad Suri met a delegation from various regions of West Africa's Ivory Coast here on Tuesday. The delegation comprised representatives of local authorities, public administration and economic operations. They exchanged ideas on various civic issues including sanitation, disposal of garbage, taxation, road construction, revenue generation and education.

Mr. Suri offered to Ivory Coast free primary education for 100 children from that country as well as guidance on scholarships to students applying to Indian universities and colleges.

Directive to civic zones Deputy Commissioners

NEW DELHI: The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Jai Kishan Sharma, convened a meeting of Deputy Commissioners of all 12 civic zones here on Tuesday.

Directing them to provide efficient and transparent administration to citizens to improve the image of the civic body, Mr. Sharma said all officers should be available to redress public grievances.

DAVP director gets promotion

NEW DELHI: Swagat Ghosh, director DAVP, has been promoted as its Director General.

Ghosh has served as Additionl DG in Doordarshan and Additional Principal Information Officer in the Defence Ministry besides holding other important posts.
