Wants Chief Minister to make specific announcement

ADILABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has demanded establishment of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Basar.

The party demanded that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy make a specific announcement in this regard during his visit to Basar on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday TDP spokesman S. Venugopalachary, Telugu Mahila State secretary Ch. Suhasini Reddy and Adilabad publicity secretary B. Goverdhan Reddy said the Congress Government has put the establishment of IIT at Basar on the backburner.

There is no move even to take up development of Basar town, which was a priority with the TDP, they added.

Some questions

Mr. Venugopalachary put some specific questions to the Chief Minister, which he wanted answered during the Praja Patham visit.

He wanted to know whether any meeting of the Basar Development Authority was held during the last two years, whether the Government stopped the funds from Endowments Department meant for celebration of Basant Panchami the birthday of Goddess Gnana Saraswati, whether the Government had stopped the Rs. 1-crore fund meant for constructing a meditation hall at Basar, whether it had denied allocation of additional land to Ms. Sudha Narayan Murthy of Infosys and whether the Government had taken any steps to acquire the 1,000 acres of land for IIT.

The leaders also pointed out that the Congress has neglected welfare of people under as many as 63 departments putting a thrust on only irrigation projects and power supply. Among these were BC, SC and ST welfare Departments which suffered due to lack of funds, they said.
