Programme enters its final phase

TAMBARAM: The Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC) programme entered its final phase on Monday, with the State Government deciding to wind up the Designated Photo Locations (DPLs) in all localities, but starting link centres to serve several areas instead.

Sixteen link centres in Tambaram Assembly constituency and 12 in Alandur have been opened to distribute EPICs instantly under the online scheme to voters who do not have identity cards. The centres will function till April 30.

The EPIC programme began on February 22, and was to be completed by the end of March, but was extended till the third week of April.

Officials said voters who did not have identity cards but had applied for them were given a pink `Electoral Card' indicating the voter's serial number and their locality's part number. They had to produce this card at their link centre and get their EPIC card instantly under the online scheme.

Earlier, the EPIC-issue programme ran into problems due to shortage of staff, equipment, failure of machinery and power breakdowns, apart from missing of names from the voters' list and the database available with the Government.

However, some residents of Pallavaram and Chromepet said their names still did not figure in the voters' list.

HSS, Tiruneermalai for Tiruneermalai; Community Hall, Chitlapakkam for Chitlapakkam; Panchayat Union Primary School in New Perungulathur for Perungulathur, Mudichur and Peerkankaranai; Sembakkam Panchayat office for Sembakkam, Vengaivasal, Madambakkam, Tiruvanchery, Agaramthen and Vengambakkam areas; Panchayat Union Middle School in Madipakkam for Nanmangalam, Kovilambakkam, Madipakkam, Ullagaram and Puzhuthivakkam; Panchayat Union Primary School in Medavakkam for Pallikaranai, Jaladampet, Perumbakam, Madurapakkam, Chittalapakkam and Ottiambakkam; Bharathidas Matriculation School in Perungudi for Perungudi, Okkiyam Thuraipakkam and Karapakkam; Adi Dravidar Primary School in Palavakkam for Kottivakkam, Palavakkam and Neelankarai; Govt. High School in Sholinganallur for Injambakkam, Sholinganaluur, Semmancheri, Uthandi and Kudumiyandithoppu; Tambaram Municipality for West Tambaram, Christ King Girls HSS, East Tambaram for East Tambaram Municipal area; 153rd Divisional Office of Chennai Corporation on Velachery Main Road for Velachery; 155th Division Office on 28th East Street Kamaraj Nagar for Taramani, Kamaraj Nagar and Tiruvanmiyur areas.

The link centres for Alandur constituency are: Cantonment Primary School in St. Thomas Mount for Nandambakkam and St. Thomas Mount; Municipal Primary School on GST Road in Pallavaram for Air Staff Quarters, Cantonment Pallavaram, Tirusulam and Meenambakkam and areas between parts 134 and 156; Vaishnav Women's College in Chromepet for parts 157 to 182 and 215 and 216; Municipal Community Hall in Chromepet for parts 183 to 188; N.S.N. Matriculation School in Chromepet for pats 189 to 214; Municipal Middle School in Keelkattalai for parts 217 to 234 and 129 to 133; A.J.S.
