Protect water bodies: court

Legal Correspondent

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the High Court on Tuesday made it clear that the State Government shall not permit any industrial activity within 10 km of Hussain Sagar and Osman Sagar lakes.

The Bench was passing these orders in a writ petition wherein report was called for regarding the situation near these lakes.

`Be proactive'

The Bench expressed its anguish at the state of affairs and wanted the Government to be more proactive to protect these drinking water sources.

The Bench took note of the fact that though it was declared that some factories were closed, they were in fact functioning when the report was being prepared and site inspected.

The case has been adjourned to June to facilitate everyone to respond.

The Bench said that appropriate stringent action will be taken to protect the drinking water lakes.
