Orissa Excise Minister resigns

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa Excise Minister Kalandi Behera on Tuesday tendered his resignation, owning "moral responsibility" for the hooch tragedies in Ganjam district.

As many as 39 persons died after consuming illicit liquor in the district since last month. While 28 persons died in the Rambha and Berhampur area in March, 11 deaths were reported in villages under the Gopalpur police station in the past couple of days.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Mr. Behera visited Gopalpur on Monday to take stock of the situation.

Mr. Patnaik has ordered that the recent deaths be brought under the purview of a judicial inquiry ordered into similar deaths last month.
