Murder case against KSRTC driver

Thiruvananthapuram: A 37-year-old physically-challenged woman, Thankachi, was killed when she was knocked down by a KSRTC bus at Cheenivila, near Mukkolackal, in Vattappara police station limits on Tuesday afternoon.

The local police said it was a case of murder. The police said the incident occurred around 1.50 p.m. when Thankachi alighted from the bus in front of her house at Cheenivila. According to the police, the driver suddenly reversed the bus when Thankachi crossed the road. She was knocked down and crushed to death under one of the rear wheels of the bus. The police have registered a case of murder against the driver, Balachandran. An official said Balachandran abandoned the bus and fled the spot immediately after the incident.

According to the police, Balachandran harboured revenge against Thankachi for giving a complaint against him to the KSRTC authorities at the Peroorkada bus depot. In her complaint lodged early this month, Thankachi had accused Balachandran of violating bus timings. She alleged that the bus arrived at Cheenivila way before the scheduled time of 7.10 a.m. Several persons in the locality had to spend much money on alternative means of transport after missing the KSRTC bus that passed the area often by 6.45 a.m., Thankachi had said in her complaint. The police said Balachandran was also Thankachi's neighbour.

Enraged over Thankachi's death, her relatives and neighbours blocked the road for nearly an hour. The Revenue Divisional Officer arrived on the spot and assured the local people that the police would look into the matter.

Thankachi is survived by her husband, Ravi, who runs a two-wheeler workshop, five-year-old son, Rahul, and one-year-old daughter, Mini. Her body has been kept at the mortuary of Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. An official said efforts were on to arrest Balachandran.
