Coimbatore: Candidates of major political parties in the fray in the Coimbatore West and Perur Assembly segments shared the same platform to list their achievements and put forth their assurances to the electorate through the media on Tuesday. The Coimbatore Press Club had organised a programme to bring all the candidates on one platform for a face-to-face with mediapersons.
Objective
The objective was to ensure that the candidates in respect of a ruling party or a sitting MLA listed their achievements in the last four-and-a-half-years while others could put forth their list of promises and priorities for the electorate to sit in judgement. The primary objective is to bring in a healthy democratic atmosphere wherein the candidates develop compatibility with their rivals, the Press Club office-bearers pointed out in their introductory remarks. In the first session relating to Coimbatore West assembly segment, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate and former Coimbatore Mayor, T. Malaravan, representing the Democratic People's Front (DPF), the Democratic Progressive Alliance nominee and the Congress candidate, Maheswari, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMDK) nominee, A.S. Akbar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Karumuthu Thiagarajan, and others shared the dais.
Welfare board
The candidates discussed their strengths and the major promises included creation of a welfare board for jewellery workers, sops for revival of the goldsmith industry, road and parking infrastructure to decongest Coimbatore city and removal of toll collection at Aatuppalam bridge. In the second session relating to Perur Assembly constituency, the AIADMK nominee, S.P. Velumani, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) nominee, N. Rukmani, the BJP nominee, K.P. Ramamurthy, and others participated.
Ring roads
The promises were an early solution to the Vellalore compost yard issue, ring roads to decongest city and water supply schemes with Aliyar as the source for a number of local bodies. Meeting the expectations of the electorate was a uniform assurance that was given by all the candidates. The Press Club said that similar programmes in respect of other constituencies in the district had been lined up for the next 10 days.
