Congress MLA courts arrest in Jehangirpuri

NEW DELHI: During its ongoing citywide sealing drive, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday targeted over 350 illegal commercial establishments in nine civic zones. The civic body squads also de-sealed more than 50 shops after its owners gave affidavits to voluntarily remove their shops by June 30.

The sealing exercise was carried out at Shakarpur, Mangolpuri, Vikas Marg, Jehangirpuri, Lajpat Nagar (Ring Road), Capt. Gaur Marg, Raja Dheer Singh Marg, Desh Bandhu Gupta Road, Rohtak Road from Zakhira to Ring Road, Paschim Vihar, Punjabi Bagh, Seemapuri, Lal Sai Marg, Jail Road to Pankha Road.

The maximum number of illegal shops were sealed in Civil Lines zone (110) followed by Shahdara-North and Shahdara-South (44 each), West (39), Rohini (37), Central (22), Karol Bagh (18), Najafgarh (11) and Sadar Paharganj (1). While no sealing action took place in the South zone, 46 shops were de-sealed in the zone.

Though the drive went off peacefully across the city, some people led by their local Congress MLA Jile Singh Chauhan protested against the drive at Jehangirpuri in North-West Delhi. Mr. Chauhan lambasted the MCD for targeting innocent citizens who were earning their livelihood by opening shops. He also courted arrest in protest against the drive.

Meanwhile, led by Leader of Opposition in MCD Subhash Arya, all the Bharatiya Janata Party Councillors have decided to sit on a daylong hunger strike at the MCD headquarters -- Town Hall -- on Wednesday to protest against the ongoing sealing of shops in residential areas.
