L-G query to MCD on trade licences
The action came after senior Bharatiya Janata Party Councillor Vijender Gupta wrote to Mr. Joshi alleging that he was not being allowed to raise the issue in the MCD House. Stating that the civic body's decision not to renew or issue new trade licences to those carrying out at least 15 different types of trade across the city was rendering several people jobless and affecting their families, Mr. Gupta had asked Mr. Joshi to direct the Mayor to allow him to place his resolution at the next meeting of the House. "My resolution is in public interest and seeks implementation of the policy of the Corporation that was approved in 2004 (MCD Ad hoc Trade Registration Scheme)," he had written to Mr. Joshi, adding: "Allowing my resolution to be tabled in the House for discussion would help save the jobs of a large number of people."
Two jailed for graft after 13 years
Special Judge Sunil Gaur also imposed a total fine of Rs. 4,000 on the accused after finding them guilty of offences under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Khazan Singh, an Inspector with the Department, and colleague Manoj Kumar had on July 27, 1993 stopped at the general merchant shop of complainant Suman Parkash, situated at Anand Parbhat here, to test the weights used at the latter's establishment. After finding some of the weights used to be of doubtful quality, Singh and Kumar bargained that they would not book the complainant if he paid them Rs. 500 as "consideration". Parkash, however, lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Police, which laid a trap for the accused and caught them red-handed taking the money from the complainant.
