This Day That Age
The election of Mrs. Sucheta Kripalani (PSP) to the Lok Sabha was held void by a three-member election tribunal. Mrs. Kripalani was returned to the Lok Sabha from the New Delhi Urban constituency in the first general elections held in 1952. The tribunal held the election void on a petition filed by Mrs. Man Mohini Sehgal alleging irregularities. Mrs. Sehgal, a Congress candidate, and Mr. Durga Das (Ind.) were defeated by Mrs. Kripalani in a triangular contest. The election petition, filed on April 7, 1952 under the Representation of the Peoples Act, alleged that Mrs. Kripalani and her agent had indulged in corrupt practices, hired or procured vehicles for the conveyance of electors and canvassed or solicited votes within a distance of 100 yards of the polling station. The tribunal, while holding that these allegations were not proved, accepted the petition on two other allegations that more persons than permitted under the rules had been employed and that the returns of the election expenditure were false.
