Erode
Karthik Madhavan
ERODE: This Assembly constituency perhaps enjoys a distinction that only a very few can match. For, all the candidates in the fray are debutants. N.K.K.P. Raja, son of former DMK Minister N.K.K. Periasamy, is contesting for the first time, as is E.R. Sivakumar of the AIADMK. But both these representatives have got political and organisational experience to back them.
Experience
Mr. Raja was the North district secretary of the party and is at present the district secretary. His aides say his experience in managing the party affairs in the entire district, which has nine municipalities, 20 panchayat unions and more than 50 panchayats, will put him in good stead. Mr. Sivakumar until recently was the chairman of the Erode Panchayat Union. He has also been in active politics for quite some time. The case of the DMDK candidate, V.C. Chandrakumar, is no different. Like him, his party led by actor Vijayakant is also testing the electoral waters for the first time. He is the party's propaganda secretary and for a long time a member of Vijayakant Fans' Association. Ponchairman of the BJP is also new to electoral politics. His claim is that he has been in public life for quite sometime and understands the nuances. Interestingly those contesting as independents too are in the fray for the first time. The similarity among the four candidates is that all of them are below 60 years and are politically classified `youth.'
