Belgaum: Two physically challenged swimmers from the city have brought laurels to the State by accomplishing the task of swimming 21 nautical miles (38 km) in the Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast recently. The two international swimmers, Raghavendra Anvekar and Rajesh Shinde, won great applause at the prize distribution ceremony of the "24th Veer Savarkar All India Sea Swimming Competition" on April 8. They were the only two competitors with disability among the 21 swimmers who participated in the event held between Veeraval and Chorwad. Mr. Anvekar and Mr. Shinde secured the 13th and 14th positions respectively. They were the only two swimmers to represent the State in the national-level competition. Mr. Anvekar and Mr. Shinde accomplished the feat in 5 hours and 56 minutes, and 6 hours and 1 minute respectively. They are members of the Swimmers' Club of Belgaum and Aquarius Club, Belgaum, and have been trained by Umesh Kalghatgi, Sudhir Kusane, Nishant Parulekar, Prasad Tendolkar, Anandeshwar Patil, Vinayak Mastamardi, Mahesh Gasti and Kallappa Patil. They are still receiving training under senior coach S.R. Sindia. Mr. Rajesh is a student of R.P.D. College, and Raghavendra of Chintamanrao Pre-University College here. Both of them are preparing themselves to swim from Dharamtar to Gateway of India, Mumbai. Mr. Kalghatgi said that their dream was to swim across the English Channel in 2007.
