PANAJI: A meeting of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Hubli, Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and Shipping Lines would be convened at Belgaum Chambers on May 4 to sensitise exporters from Belgaum, Hubli and Desur about the advantages of moving their cargo through Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) in south Goa. The decision was taken at a meeting held on Tuesday here between the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hubli, the Logistics Committee of GCCI and Shipping Lines. The meeting was aimed at assessing the quantum of cargo available in the region to try and boost the exports using container through MPT. GCCI Logistics Committee officials said that the South Central Railway and Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR) have agreed to run a rake initially on a weekly basis from Desur in Belgaum to MPT, with the MPT providing the support services in the port. This would help exports through the port and give added business to the shipping lines, said GCCI Director-General P.K. Pinto. Convener of the Export Promotion Cell of KCCI Kumar Tiwari said that unless the exporters from Belgaum, Desur, Hubli and the nearby regions were sensitised to the fact that there were advantages such as saving of cost, time and effort by diverting their export cargo to Goa port instead of Mumbai, Tuticorin, etc., they cannot be expected to respond to the initiative.
