Curbs on Darfur suspects

United Nations: After days of dithering, the U.N. Security Council has imposed sanctions on four Sudanese individuals, including travel ban and freezing of their worldwide assets, for their alleged connivance in rights violations and war crimes in the Darfur region. This is first time the Council had taken action in the conflict and American Ambassador John Bolton described it as ``down payment'' with more to come. But the votes for the resolution did not come for free and there was tradeoff as the U.S. and its allies agreed to allow the Council to issue a consensus Tanzanian-drafted statement expressing support for Darfur talks being conducted in Abuja, Nigeria and asking the parties to make a ``speedy'' progress to conclude a peace accord. — PTI
