India chapter of WSO soon

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: Kochi-based National Institute of Fire Engineering (NIFE) is opening the World Safety Organisation (WSO) India chapter.

The WSO is a prominent professional body in the area of safety operating all over the world with headquarters at Texas in the U.S. It is also an official advisory board on safety to the United Nations.

The WSO empowers working safety officers with various certifications on continuing education basis. Once the India chapter is functional, the students of NIFE would have the facility of obtaining the WSO certification on an online methodology, says M.V. Thomas, director of NIFE.

NIFE, he pointed out, had been giving a diploma in fire and safety engineering since 1992 in Kochi.

It has now about 30 branches and around 3,000 students. It has tied up with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the U.S. Department of Labour.
