Readers of literary works are in a minority: S. Diwakar `Numerous books are published today, but there is no literary criticism'

Sirsi: "In the next 15 years, literature will sink into obscurity due to television. Readers of literary works are in a minority. There is no future for literature," noted Kannada writer and critic S. Diwakar has said.

He was speaking after receiving the B.H. Shreedhar Literary Award for 2006 for his work "Napatteyada Gramaphone Mattu Itara Prabhandagalu", at a programme held at Sirsi Vinayak Hall on Monday.

Ramadevi Shreedhar, wife of late B.H. Shreedhar, presented the award.

"Earlier there were journalists who were interested in literature. Today only two per cent of journalists are interested in literature. A large number of books are published today, but there is no literary criticism. In future, only small magazines will publish literary works. Big journals are moving away from literature," he said.

Yakshagana Academy president Shambu Hegde Keremane, who presided over the function, presented the B.H.S. Education Award to Prajna Bhat of M.G.C. College, Siddapur.

After the programme, a play "Khare Charanadasanembe Kalla", written and directed by Kiran Bhat, was staged by children of Chintana Ranga.
