ON CAMPAIGN TRAIL: G.K. Vasan, Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, canvassing support for the Congress candidate N.R.T. Rajkumar in Theni on Wednesday.
THENI: Defeating the AIADMK in this election would not only unseat the `autocratic' and `despotic' government but also establish a Centre-friendly government that would bring more schemes to the State, said G.K. Vasan, Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation. He was campaigning for the Congress candidate N.R.T. Rajkumar in Theni on Wednesday. Despite poor response and less cooperation from the State Government, he said 13 Union Ministers from the State had brought many schemes for massive infrastructure development in the State. They did good work in two-year period, which could not be done even in five years. The State Government should be Centre-friendly to get more schemes for rapid growth of the State. All promises made by the DPA would be implemented without fail, he said and added that every vote cast in favour of the DPA would ensure development of the State. Hitting hard the AIADMK government's performance, he said it harassed not only the Opposition parties but also all sections of people including farmers, weavers, workers and poor people. Mr. Vasan said the AIADMK Government did not even show accounts for the amount granted by the Centre for flood and tsumani relief works. This poll should put a full stop to `autocracy.' The crowd was less in Theni owing to weekly holiday for traders and business establishments in the town and moderate in Periakulam. The Minister campaigned for P. Seeman (DMK) in Andipatti, L. Mookiah (DMK) in Periakulam, R. Senthilvel (Congress) at Batlagundu in Nilakottai constituency and I. Periasamy at Chinnalapatti in Athoor constituency and sitting MLA K. Balabarathi (CPI-M) in Dindigul.

Mr. Vasan has urged the voters to put an end to the autocratic AIADMK rule. Addressing a series of election meetings in Paramakudi near here on Monday to seek vote for K.V.R. Ram Prabhu, who is contesting from the Paramakudi constituency as the Congress nominee, he said there was no real democracy in conducting the State Assembly during the AIADMK rule. Voices of opposition members were curtailed in the Assembly by adopting oppressive approach. The AIADMK Government announced some concessions to the people only at the fag end of the five-year rule. Fear of defeat was the main reason for a series of announcement made by her. She did not launch any constructive welfare scheme during most part of her rule. She took suppressive measures against government servants and others. Mr. Vasan said frequent transfer of government officials, ministers, police officials and others was the only achievement of the five-year AIADMK rule. It caused nothing but malfunction of the State Government. The 13 Central Ministers from Tamil Nadu had brought many schemes including Sethu project to Tamil Nadu.
