Four final-year students of Sun College of Engineering and Technology in Nagercoil have designed an automatic wheelchair named as `living wheels.' Arun Vignesh, Sreekanth, Shanoj and Sibimon, studying electronics and communication, have succeeded in developing a wheel chair that can be controlled by the user or an external person without applying any manual power. The wheel chair has been designed in such a way that it is very useful for physically handicapped persons. It is cheaper and automatic. The project has three sections - mechanical, electric and electronic. The mechanical section has the frame and adjustable backrest, shaft, wheels, flanges, chain and sprocket arrangement. The electric section has a permanent magnet DC motor of high torque, power window motor and batteries. The electronic section has a remote control to guide the movement of the wheel chair. They have decided to donate the first wheel chair to a hospital.
Sri K G S Arts College, Srivaikundam, celebrated the World Heritage Day recently. As part of the celebrations, students undertook a heritage trip to Kalaikoil at Krishnapuram to study cultural and aesthetic value of monolithic sculptures inside the temple.
