BJP to take "ideological stand" on office of profit issue

Neena Vyas

Party does not want legislature separated from executive

  • BJP will wait for Government's stand
  • Any move to reappoint Sonia NAC chief will be challenged
  • Definition of "office of profit" should not be diluted.

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party is not prepared to make known its views on the office of profit issue and possible legislation on this subject before the Government spells out its views.

The BJP will take an "ideological stand," spokesman Prakash Javadekar said here on Wednesday even as Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani demanded the immediate disbanding of the National Advisory Council (NAC). Congress president Sonia Gandhi resigned as chairperson of the NAC and as Lok Sabha member following the controversy over the office of profit issue.

Asked what he meant by an ideological stand, Mr. Javadekar said the party did not want the Constitution diluted and the legislature separated from the executive. The separation was the idea behind the office of profit rule, he said.

    PMO's prestige lowered

    Lalit Shastri reports from Bhopal

In Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Advani said the prestige of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) had been lowered over the past two years as the NAC was monitoring the implementation of the United Progressive Alliance Government's Common Minimum Programme.

Addressing mediapersons before leaving for Bhopal on the 15th day of his "Bharat Suraksha Yatra," Mr. Advani described the NAC as an extra-constitutional authority and said thePMO should directly supervise the implementation of the programme.

He cautioned the Government against moving a special Bill in Parliament to address the "office of profit" issue. Any such initiative to reappoint Ms. Gandhi NAC chairperson would be challenged in court.

Citing Articles 102 and 103 of the Constitution, Mr. Advani said the definition of "office of profit" should not be diluted.
