KHAMMAM: About 200 police personnel were deployed in Dammapet mandal, stepping up the patrolling in tribal villages following Tuesday's attack on a police party. The tribal villages which are under the influence of the CPI(ML New Democracy) -- Tudum Debba and Sakti -- are under close watch in view of the renewed fight for land. The tribals staking claim for Government lands are coming in the way of the crop harvest in disputed lands. A strong mob of about 100 tribals tried to prevent a tribal farmer from harvesting his mango crop in Jaggaram village. The villager contended that the land he had purchased from a non-tribal farmer included surplus land as well. They wanted the land to be distributed to the landless. The farmer tried to take the mango crop with police protection, but in vain. Three of the police constables on bandobust duty near the mango grove were whisked away allegedly by the tribals. They were beaten up brutally. A police officer said that the tribal ventured to attack one of the constables with a sickle. Police forces mobilised immediately from other stations in district rushed to the village and secured release of the three constables.
