Belgaum: The district unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) organised a procession of slum dwellers on Wednesday and staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office demanding rehabilitation of families facing threat of displacement following the ongoing beautification of Fort Lake here. NCP leaders said several families had been living there for over two decades. Though the Government had not provided any permanent residential facilities to these families, a tent school had been catering for educational needs of the children of these slum dwellers. It was forced to close during monsoon since there was no permanent structure to house the school. It demanded that the Government construct a permanent school building for the children along with proper rehabilitation of the families. It urged the district administration to complete ongoing road repair works in the city before the monsoon set in. A road divider should be provided between Belgaum and Sambra on the Belgaum-Bagalkot State Highway and trees should be planted on the either side of the road.
