YSR invited to visit South Africa

HYDERABAD: Impressed by Indiramma (Integrated Novel Development of Rural Areas and Model Municipal Areas) and Andhra Pradesh Government's focus on housing for the poor, L.N. Sisulu, South Africa Minister for Housing, has invited Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to her country.

Leading a delegation that called on Dr. Reddy at the Secretariat, Ms. Sisulu was impressed with Andhra Pradesh's focus on housing for the shelter less and the State Government being attentive to the aspirations of every citizen to own a dwelling unit. - Staff Reporter

TDP suspends ex-corporators

Maoist arms dump unearthed

WARANGAL: The police unearthed a weapon dump belonging to Maoist and Prathighatana group of naxals in forest areas Govindaraopet mandal and recovered 12 weapons and 1,551 rounds of live ammunition.

Superintendent of Police M. S. Ravindra and Additional SP (Operations) Rajesh Kumar said the police parties which were combing the forest areas abutting Bussapur, Machapur, Moddulagudem and other villages in Bhupalpalli areas found the two dumps. - Staff Reporter

AISF plea on mid-day meal

HYDERABAD: All-India Student Federation (AISF) president P. Muralidar has represented to Union Secretary for Elementary Education and Literacy Kumidi Bansal and State Secretary for School Education P. Krishnaiah seeking continuance of the mid-day meal scheme in the State in summer.

A press release issued by AISF here on Wednesday said that if the scheme was discontinued schoolchildren would starve and the number of school dropouts would increase. - Special Correspondent

Kadapa dancer for Singapore

KADAPA: Kuchipudi dancer from Kadapa Mada Spandana will perform a dance ballet `Telugu Vaibhavam' at the Singapore Telugu Cultural Festival slated from April 29 to May 1 at Singapore.

The fete at Polytechnic Convention Centre at Singapore is being organised by Andhra Pradesh Cultural Affairs Department, general secretary of Spandana Dance Academy Mada Brahmam said on Wednesday. - Staff Reporter

Award for Vambay housing colony

HYDERABAD: The Vambay housing colony at Saidabad, where 3,024 houses are being constructed, has won the third prize in national-level competition for low cost housing for 2005-2006. The competition is organised by HUDCO. Hyderabad Collector Arvind Kumar received the `Sir M. Viswesvarayya Award' at the 36th annual day of Hudco at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on Wednesday from Union Minister for Urban Development, S. Jaipal Reddy. The award carries a shield, a certificate and a cash award of Rs. 40,000. - Special Correspondent

Excise official arrested by ACB

HYDERABAD: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Wednesday arrested Nizamabad Assistant Commissioner of Excise P. Nageswara Rao on charge of possessing assets worth over Rs. 3 crores that were disproportionate to his known sources of income.

"We unearthed these properties after conducting searches at Nizamabad, Ongole, Madhapur and Kukatpally in Hyderabad and Karnataka State," ACB Joint Director G. Surya Prakasha Rao told The Hindu .

TRS rebel addresses Congress meeting

Sangareddy: Strengthening speculations of increasing rapport with the Congress dissident TRS legislator T. Jayprakash Reddy on Wednesday went a step ahead and wore a Congress `kanduva' and addressed the Kondapur Congress party workers meeting.

Mr. Reddy said he and his cadre would work together with the Congress for victory in the forthcoming gram panchayat elections.

He thanked Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy for granting Rs. 10 crores for the drinking water project to Kondapur mandal. - Staff Reporter

Assistant motor vehicle inspector in ACB net

ADILABAD: The Anti Coruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday registered a case against the assistant motor vehicle inspector of Wankidi check-post after a surprise check by officials resulted in seizure of Rs. 44,800 in cash from unauthorised persons at the check post. According to Adilabad ACB Inspector Kiran Kumar, a routine surprise check conducted on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, resulted in discovery of two youths collecting money from truckers.-Staff Reporter

Nod for drinking water scheme

SANGAREDDY: According to press release from Union Minister of State for Rural Development A.Narendra, a drinking water scheme that would cater to the needs of 49 villages in Medak parliamentary constituency has been sanctioned by his Ministry today. The G O 129 Jakkannapet would be the centre for operations and the cost of the project would be Rs 9.40 crores.-Staff Reporter

New SP for ISO status for headquarters

SANGAREDDY: New Superintendent of Police for Medak P.V.Sunil Kumar, addressing his officers on Wednesday has directed them to work towards achieving ISO status for the headquarters. He wanted them to provide best services to the people and to concentrate on clearing pending files. Dharna disrupts traffic

KHAMMAM: A five-hour-long long dharna organised by the Munnuru Kapu Sangham at Mudigonda affected vehicular traffic on the Khammam-Kodad road on Wednesday.

Thousands of people belonging to the community squatted in front of the MRO office protesting against what they called denial of BC certificates to the students and youths of the caste. Many vehicles were stranded on the road for hours together.

Led by TDP and CPI leaders, S. Venkataveeraiah and M. Sanghaiah, the protestors demanded a categorical assurance from the revenue authorities on the issue.

Boy dies in road accident

KADAPA: An eight-year-old boy, J. Sharif died and eight others sustained injuries when two autorickshaws collided near Kothapalem in Mydukur mandal on Tuesday night.

The boy belonging to Choutapalle in Mydukur mandal succumbed to injuries in Kadapa Government hospital, according to the police. Injured persons - Shaik Gulzar Begum, Shaik Noorunnisa, Dandu Subbarayudu, Guruprasad, Viswanath, Nagesh and one auto driver Budagalla Subbarayudu were shifted to Proddatur Government hospital, police said-Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: Twenty students of Child Labour Rehabilitation Centre (CLRC) run by Santhi Educational Society at Sareen Nagar, were selected for AP Residential Schools at B. Camp here and Arikera in Aluru constituency.

The students were trained at the rehabilitation center, which received financial support under the National Child Labour Project.-Staff Reporter

KADAPA: Collector G. Asok Kumar on Wednesday assured water supply to KC Canal ayacut for the second crop. KC Canal and Brahmamsagar reservoir received good inflows, in sharp contrast to lack of water in KC Canal three years ago, he said in a Praja Patham gram sabha at the village secretariat at Khajipet.

A sum of Rs. 13 crores was spent to supply drinking water to 105 villages in 21 gram panchayats of Khajipet mandal, the Collector said.-Staff Reporter

Bar Council polls on April 28

TIRUPATI: In all, 801 advocates who are members of the Tirupati Bar Association, would be exercising their franchise to elect 25 members to the AP Advocates Bar Council.

The elections are to be held on April, 28.

According to G.V. Subbaiah, President of the Bar Association, identity cards issued by the Secretary, AP Bar Council was mandatory at the time of voting.

VIZIANAGARAM: Minister for Agriculture N. Raghuveera Reddy is arriving in Dharmavaram in S. Kota mandal on Thursday morning to inaugurate SC/ BC hostel and Degree College buildings. One killed in accident

VIZIANAGARAM: Gandi Naidu (48) of Kantakapalli was killed when the auto he was travelling in was hit by a lorry at Alamanda in Jami mandal on Wednesday morning, according to Jami police.

Assistant Engineer in ACB net

VIZIANAGARAM: Yadla Govinda Rao, Assistant Engineer (Rural Water Supply), was arrested by Anti Corruption Bureau officials at his office in Bhogapuram on Tuesday evening when he demanded and accepted Rs. 30,000 from a contractor for clearing bills. Chemical analysis conducted on the tainted notes was found positive. He was produced in the ACB Court, Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Indiramma programme

VIZIANAGARAM: District Collector B. Venkateswara Rao has said that housing and pensions are being given priority in the villages identified under Indiramma programme in the second phase of the Praja Patham beginning from May 7. Hence, he asked officials at a review meeting to be ready by completing markings for the 61,095 houses sanctioned in the villages. He instructed officials to make the `Asha' programme from May 2 to 30 a success and said the response to chaitanya yatras from April 2 to 20 was good. Correspondent
