Special trains to Nagercoil, Coimbatore

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will run the following special trains to Nagercoil and Coimbatore from here in both the directions, says a railway release. Train no. 0611 will leave Chennai Egmore at 8 p.m. on April 28 and 30 and reach Nagercoil 10 a.m. the next day. In the return direction, train no. 0612 will leave Nagercoil at 1.30 p.m. on April 29 and May 1 and arrive at Egmore at 4.30 a.m. the next day.

Train no. 0624 will leave Coimbatore at 11.45 p.m. on April 28 and arrive at Chennai Central at 8 a.m. the next day. Train no. 0623 will leave Central at 10.30 p.m. on April 29 and reach Coimbatore at 7.30 a.m. the next day.

Reservations for the trains will begin on Thursday. Tatkal reservation is also available for the above trains. — Special Correspondent

Five pairs of trains to terminate at Podanur

CHENNAI: From May 15, five pairs of trains, running between Madurai and Coimbatore via Dindigul and Pollachi, will be terminated at Podanur to facilitate completion of master plan arrangements in Coimbatore.

The trains are nos. 772/771 Dindigul - Coimbatore - Dindigul passengers; 6708/6707 Madurai - Coimbatore - Madurai expresses ; 778/777 Madurai - Coimbatore - Madurai fast passengers; 6716/6715 Madurai - Coimbatore - Madurai expresses and 774/773 Pollachi - Coimbatore - Pollachi passengers. — Special Correspondent

Air Deccan base at Thiruvananthapuram

CHENNAI: Thiruvananthapuram will become the seventh base for Air Deccan. The other bases are: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. The first aircraft to be based at Thiruvananthapuram will Airbus-320. According to a release from managing director Capt. G.R. Gopinath, Thiruvananthapuram will be connected by the airline from Chennai and Bangalore with daily flights. With Thiruvananthapuram as the base, the airline will fly to Delhi via Chennai and link Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai via Kochi effective April 27. — Special Correspondent

Workshop

CHENNAI: A workshop will be organised on robust inspections for safety and enhanced quality at Kalpakkam on April 26 and 27 to promote awareness of latest inspection technologies and the role of robust inspections for enhanced safety and reliability.

The significance of defects and flaws in materials and need for inspection, quality assurance concepts and practices being adopted for pre-service and in-service inspections and role of professional and standardisation bodies in training and certification are among the topics to be covered. — Special Correspondent

Contact seminar classes

MADURAI: The Directorate of Distance Education of Madurai Kamaraj University will conduct contact seminar classes for first year postgraduate courses of Madurai centre at Madura College on April 29 and 30.

For first-year undergraduate and postgraduate students of Theni centre, the classes will be conducted at Nadar Saraswathi Primary School, Theni, on the same days, according to a press release from S. Vadivelu, Director, Distance Education.

Conference

MADURAI: The annual district conference of Y's Men's Club of South Central District was held in Sivakasi on Sunday.

M.A. Meenakshi Sundaram was installed governor of south central district. ADP. Thangadurai and K.L. Rajkumar assumed office as district secretary and district bulletin editor, says a press release.

Online registration for entrance examination

MADURAI : Online registration for Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination conducted by Anna University will end on April 28. The registration began on April 12. So far, 2,506 students have registered at Agricultural College and Research Institute (ACRI) here representing Zone-B.

A press release from K. Ramamoorthy, Dean, ACRI, said registration was going on for medicine, engineering, agriculture and veterinary sciences. Anna University had allotted more seats (for writing the examination) to Zone-B for the benefit of students, Dr. Ramamoorthy, who is the Zone-B coordinator, said. The other registration centre in Madurai is Thiagarajar College of Engineering, for Zone-A, where the online registration had to be closed on Friday since the allotted quota of nearly 5,000 students for TNPCEE registration was completed.

Clinic for diabetic patients

MADURAI: Chennai-based M. V. Diabetes Hospital is opening an exclusive clinic here on Thursday to provide primary and secondary prevention and care for diabetic patients, in association with Shenbagam Hospital.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Joint Director Vijay Viswanathan said the objective was to extend the hospital's expertise to southern districts.

Water level

MADURAI : The level in the Periyar dam stood at 120.80 feet with an inflow of 220 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 60.20 feet with a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 5464 mcft.

Governor arrives in Udhagamandalam

Udhagamandalam: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala arrived here on Wednesday.

The Collector, C. Vijayaraj Kumar, and senior district officials received him at the Raj Bhavan.

He is likely to stay here for about ten days.

Compact disc on the Nilgiris

Udhagamandalam: The Nilgiris Wildlife and Environment Association (NWLEA) have brought out a compact disc titled `Window on Nilgiris' containing details on various aspects of the district. Stating that the project had been implemented on behalf of the Department of Tourism at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs provided by the Hill Area Development Programme, the vice- president, NWLEA, Geetha Srinivasan, said that the Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar would release it on April 27.

Applications to be issued for admission

Coimbatore: Annamalai University Study Centres located on Nanjappa Road and Trichy Road (Singanallur) will begin issuing application-cum-admission forms on Thursday.

A release said that the applications would be for the academic year 2006-07, by distance education mode, for various under graduate and post-graduate courses.

Appeal to parties

Tiruchi: The Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam has appealed to political parties of the State to sink their differences to opposed the Cauver Tribunal's move to constitute another expert committee.

The issue has been pending before the Tribunal for 16 years and still there was no indication of the final award being pronounced, the Kazhagam's district president, S.T.Rajendran, said in a statement.

Wheat import opposed

Tiruchi: The Bharathiya Kisan Sangh has demanded an immediate end on import of wheat. Its State general secretary, P.Ayyakannu expressed surprise over the Centre's decision to import wheat at Rs.13 per kg when it was available in the domestic market at Rs.7 per kg. In many places, there were no takers for wheat and import of the grain was totally unjustified at this juncture, he said.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.24 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 1,430 cusecs and the outflow, 2,000 cusecs. —

Jeweller commits suicide

TIRUNELVELI: The proprietor of a Madurai-based jewellery shop committed suicide here.

The police said Rajamannar (55) of South Perumal Maistry Street, Madurai, stayed in a lodge at Tirunelveli Junction on April 24.

When the room remained closed for two days and foul smell emanated from the room, the lodge manager informed the police, who opened the door only to find the body of Mr. Rajamannar.

In a suicide note, he has cited the hefty borrowings as the reason behind the extreme step he had taken.

Stray tiger kills 12 domestic animals

TIRUNELVELI: The old stray tiger, which has killed a shepherd and couple of cattle, kills seven more cows and five goats.

According to forest department sources, the predator, after hunting domestic animals of Manakkan of Panagudi area on Wednesday, had eaten only a small quantity of meat and left a major portion behind.

District Forest Officer H. Venu Prasad said that the forest personnel, who had put two cages with baits, planned to put two more cages with live baits to catch the tiger, now operating within 3 to 5 sq. km. on the periphery of the reserve forest area.

"Apart from this some more experts are coming to the district on Thursday to finalise the strategy to catch the animal alive."

Nagercoil: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited in Kanyakumari district has directed the STD PT / village PT operators and telegraph franchisees to collect 12.24 per cent service tax.

DMDK candidate hospitalised

Erode: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam candidate, S. Natarajan of Gobichettipalaym constituency, developed chest pain and was immediately rushed to the Government Hospital, Gobichettipalayam, while conducting election campaign on Wednesday evening at L.Kallipatti in Gobichettipalayam. He was undergoing intensive treatment. The doctors said his condition is stable.

BSNL announcement

ERODE: The General Manager of Erode Telecom, BSNL, in a press release has stated that Service Tax (including education cess) on all existing Telecom services such as Landline phones (B-fone), ITC Card, Sancharnet, Cellular phone prepaid or post paid cards and recharge coupon would be levied at an enhanced rate of 12.24 per cent (12 per cent service tax, 0.24 per cent education cess) with effect from April 18. All BSNL landlines, CMTS customers, STD booths, local booths and VPT franchises were requested by the Department to take care of charging the change of service tax from April 18. - Staff Reporter

`Remove banners'

SALEM: Salem Corporation has directed political parties to remove party flag masts, election banners, posters and festoons put up in public places, roadsides and on streets in city limit

within 24 hours.

In a release, Returning Officer of the Salem - I Assembly constituency and Corporation Commissioner A.M. Selvam said that if the parties failed to do so, civic workers, along with the personnel from the revenue and police departments, would remove them, and charge the expenditure in the candidate's election account. - Staff Reporter
