KHAMMAM: A five-hour-long long dharna organised by the Munnuru Kapu Sangham at Mudigonda affected vehicular traffic on the Khammam-Kodad road on Wednesday. Thousands of people belonging to the community squatted in front of the MRO office protesting against what they called denial of BC certificates to the students and youths of the caste. Many vehicles were stranded on the road for hours together. Led by TDP and CPI leaders, S. Venkataveeraiah and M. Sanghaiah, the protestors demanded a categorical assurance from the revenue authorities on the issue. They said that though the Munnuru Kapu community was accorded BC status, some of the revenue personnel were deliberately making the youths run from pillar to post for such certificates. Though the head of the family was in possession of BC certificate, other members were being denied the status. This was affecting the education and employment opportunities, they said. At one point of time the protest turned unruly and the police resorted to a mild lathicharge to control the crowds. The protestors relented after receiving an assurance from the revenue authorities for a review of the issue.
