  • They built infrastructure of global standards

Bangalore: As part of its education grants and donations programme, Sun Microsystems India on Wednesday announced the launch of the Sun Matching Grant Programme for the second year in the country.

Through the initiative, Sun will provide hardware, software and web-based training material, which will allow educational institutions and students to benefit from Sun technology. Last year, 45 educational institutions utilised the opportunity to build and enhance their educational and learning infrastructure to meet global standards.

    Equipment

Under the programme, Sun will donate equipment with a similar investment by educational institution or partner aid organisation.

The programme, which has been designed to provide impetus to education initiatives, will allow educational institutions to purchase items at "standard education prices", and qualify for receiving an identical unit free of cost.

Mohan Doss, Regional Director, Education and Research, Asia South, Sun Microsystems India, said the programme would help create skilled technical professionals who contributed to the economy.

    Commitment

"Sun embraces developing countries and continues to demonstrate its commitment to enabling technical-skills capacity building through donations and grants to institutions responsible for the development of the future workforce," he said.

"Sun is prepared to make a significant investment in academic and research lab environments," K.P. Unnikrishnan, Marketing Director, Sun Microsystems India, said. "This investment will be in the form of `matching grants' of new equipment, or upgrades to existing equipment, for use in student academic laboratory environments," he added.
