Two translators appointed in Jessica murder case

Staff Reporter

Translation of records to be complete by May 15

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government's Standing Counsel, Mukta Gupta, on Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that the Government had appointed two translators to assist the High Court Registry to translate the Jessica Lal case records from Hindi to English to facilitate early hearing of the appeal against acquittal of all nine accused in the case by the trial court.

Ms. Gupta informed a Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Manmohan Sarin and Justice J. M. Malik that the translation work would be completed by May 15.

At the last hearing, the Bench had directed the Delhi Government to appoint two translators and make them available to the High Court Registry for the translation work so that the hearing of the appeal was taken up without wasting any time.

The Bench had then observed that the job of translating the records of the trial courts, where the proceedings are conducted in Hindi, takes a lot of time and, thus, affects the hearing of appeals against acquittals.

Following widespread public outrage over the acquittal of all nine accused, including prime accused Siddharth Vashishtha alias Manu Sharma in the case in February this year, the Court has put the hearing of the appeal filed by the Delhi police against the acquittals on fast track.

Earlier, counsel for the accused informed the Court that all eight accused except Vikas Yadav had furnished their respective bail bonds and sureties to the Registry as directed by the Bench at the last hearing.

The Court directed Vikas Yadav to submit his surety when his counsel informed the Court that his client had furnished a bail bond to the Tihar Central Jail Superintendent here.

Vikas is at present lodged in Tihar Jail.
