BANGALORE: A new series of four Hindi books for pre-schoolers by Coonoor Kripalani will help make learning so much fun. And they have been imaginatively and beautifully illustrated.

Pre-schoolers learn that there is more to the letter `A' than an apple.

The books, Akshar (Alphabet Book), Ginthi (Number Book), Rang (Colours) and Aakaar (Shapes), were published by Bhartiya Vidhya Bhavan's International School, Singapore, in 2006.

They are quite unlike any other books available in the market. They are coloured and illustrated and designed as appealing tools for young ones to learn the alphabet, numbers, colours and shapes in Hindi.

Each page has been illustrated with a new design and the cover is bright to attract young readers aged between three and five.

Rajiv Chowdhry, chief executive officer of Apeejay Oxford Bookstores, said the colourful presentation was sure to be a hit with the children, and it would encourage learning of concepts. "Such books will create a love for books and learning, and give children pride in learning the national language," he said.

Ms. Kripalani said she had brought out books in Hindi "that would appeal to children growing up in a surrounding where sources of learning have become enriched by the blaze and speed of instantaneous information."

Ms. Kripalani is Honorary Research Fellow at the Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong. She is also the author of a concise biography of Mahatma Gandhi and is now engaged in research and writing on Bollywood and popular Hindi films.
