BANGALORE: Even as the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council has expressed itself against the re-introduction of the controversial "pay and park" system, the Traffic Police have recommended that the system should be brought back on 91 roads in the city. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M.N. Reddi sent the list of 91 roads to BMP Commissioner K. Jothiramalingam on Monday. "We have recommended that the `pay and park' system needs to be re-introduced at over 200 locations on 91 roads, where disciplined parking is essential. The list has been sent to the BMP but there has been no discussion on the issue as yet," Mr. Reddi told The Hindu on Wednesday. Sources in the BMP, who admitted that they have received the list, said no decision had been taken as yet. "We are planning to work out a concrete solution to the problem at least on some prominent roads," the sources said. After the former Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, scrapped the "pay and park" system on April 1, 2005, the N. Dharam Singh Government had rejected the proposal and asked the BMP to bring back the system. Though the Government's decision was placed before the BMP Council in February, the issue was not taken up for discussion following differences between the Opposition Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members. While approving the BMP budget for 2006-2007, the council set up a committee to study the pros and cons of bringing back the system. The sources said the committee, headed by Mayor Mumtaz Begum, was likely to meet this week.
