THE ADMISSION process for undergraduate medical, dental and engineering courses is gathering heat. After the announcement of CET dates by the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell, the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K) has announced its date for Under Graduate Entrance Test (UGET). If the Education Bill passed by the Legislative Assembly becomes a law, the prominence of the State CET will definitely fade. The CET Cell will be reduced to a seat selection centre for hardly 4,000 of the 44,000 engineering seats and the 380 MBBS seats. No wonder, the COMED-K's UGET has suddenly become "important" for students. Here is a list of the medical colleges attached to COMED-K: Adichunchangiri Institute of Medical Sciences (approved intake: 100 seats); B.L.D.E. Association's Sri B.M. Patil Medical College (150 seats); Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College (100); Fr. Muller's Medical College (100); H.K.E. Society's M.R. Medical College (100); J.J.M. Medical College (245); J.S.S. Medical College (150); K.S. Hegde Medical Academy (100); K.V.G. Medical College (100); Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (120); M.S. Ramaiah Medical College (150); Sri. B.V.V. Sangha's S. Nijalingappa Medical College (100); Sri Siddhartha Medical College (130); Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College (150) and S.D.M. College of Medical Sciences and Hospital (100). These colleges together offer 1,895 seats.

Seminar
AN INTERNATIONAL seminar on "Finite Element Analysis of Structures, Bridges and Dams" was organised jointly by PESIT and ProSIM R & D centre on Monday. "It is time to reopen the civil engineering departments in most colleges as there is an acute shortage of civil engineers in India today," said C.E.G. Justo, director, Karnataka Road Development Corporation, while inaugurating the seminar. He said the Government and private sector industries had had to approach foreign agencies for specialised projects that had to be designed to suit the Indian context. "There are increasing opportunities to explore in the field of infrastructure development. There is an urgent need to apply robust finite element analysis for the design of dams, bridges and other structures," said S. Shamsundar, MD, ProSIM R&D Centre.
