Letters to the Editor
Incompatible political parties have formed conglomerates led by the DMK and the AIADMK for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. But clouds of serious post-election rift have already started forming. While the developments in Sri Lanka pose a serious challenge to the MDMK-AIADMK alliance, the latest on the Cauvery front is bound to create differences between the DMK and other UPA partners.
C.S. Venkitasubramanyan,
* * * The speed with which various parties have been unfolding promises confirms that they are bent on capturing power at any cost. It looks like the State is heading for a hung Assembly as the people are in a dilemma, with all parties offering the moon if elected.
G. Ramachandran,
* * * What did the parties, which are now promising the world and more, do to eradicate poverty when they were in power? Does keeping the poor in poverty suit them? Politicians should first resolve to serve the people who elect them, and not serve themselves at people's cost.
K.R. Raman,
* * * The report that DMK leader C.N. Annadurai used his community name `Mudaliar' when he contested elections from Kancheepuram in 1957 "perhaps to woo the majority community voters" (Poll Pourri, April 23) is incorrect, besides being misleading. His name was printed as Annadurai Mudaliar in the electoral roll and he had to use it in the nomination paper to satisfy election officials. I remember that he explained this in 1957 when he filed his nomination.
A. Sampath,
