WELLINGTON: The United Nations Development Fund said on Thursday it would not send an election observer team to Fiji because the invitation from the Government was late. According to the news agency in Fiji, Pacnews, the organisation's deputy resident representative in Suva, Hans de Graaff, said the organisation would have liked to send an election observer team, but time constraints prevented it from doing so. Fiji's general election will be held in 10 days. Mr. Graaff said a request to file an election observer mission must be made six months ahead of the election date. He said it needs the approval of the General Assembly and this process takes usually six months. The U.N. sent a mission to monitor the last Fiji election in 2001. The E.U., the University of the South Pacific and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat would send observer teams for the election. Xinhua
