News Analysis
* * Siddharth Varadarajan clarifies that in his report on Nepal ("Elections will be given top priority: SPA", and later revised as "Nepal Maoists want `unconditional' elections", April 26, 2006), the name of the former Finance Minister and leading civil society campaigner for democracy is Devendra Raj Panday, and not Devendra Nath Pandey, as published.
* * A reader points out that DMK party president M. Karunanidhi has been incorrectly referred to as "the septuagenarian leader" ("Poll Pourri Assembly Elections 2006", April 27, 2006). Mr. Karunanidhi is an octogenarian (a person between 80 and 90 years of age) as he is 82.
* * Is it "ionotropic support" (as the text said) or "iatrotropic support", asks a reader. The sentence was: "Dr. Anupam Verma on Tuesday said Mr. Mahajan `continues to be maintained on high levels of ventilatory and ionotropic support" ("No improvement in Mahajan's condition", April 26, 2006, page 1). The Hindu Welfare Centre clarifies that in the context of this report, it is "inotropic", which is to do with increasing the blood pressure. "Inotropic" is defined as that which is affecting the force of muscle contraction. For example, an inotropic heart drug is one that affects the force with which the heart muscle contracts. (The words "ionotropic" and "iatrotropic" do exist and have different meanings.)
* * "Pattammal conferred with `Sangeeta Vidyanidhi'" was the heading of the report (Chennai city, April 26, 2006, and Tamil Nadu editions, April 27, 2006) on the doyen of Carnatic music D.K. Pattammal being conferred this title, on Tuesday in Chennai. It should have been "Pattammal conferred `Sangeeta Vidyanidhi'", as in the text. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
