BELLARY: The Kurgodu Kshetra Ulisi Horata Samiti has decided to intensify its agitation to pressure the Government not to shift the Assembly constituency from Kurgodu to Kampli, as recommended in the draft proposal of the Commission on Delimitation of Constituencies. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, the samiti leaders, including N. Suryanarayan Reddy, MLA from Kurgodu, Manjunath Gowda, Janekunte Basavaraj, president of the Bellary Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee, V.S. Shivashankar, among others, said the delimitation of constituencies was done in a most unscientific way and took exception to shifting of the Assembly constituency from Kurgodu to Kampli. To start with, "rasta roko" would be held at various places from Friday, they said. A delegation would be taken to the commission to press for their demand, they added. According to them, unlike Kurgodu, the proposed constituency, Kampli in Hospet taluk, is situated remotely both geographically and for administrative reasons. They pointed out that Kurgodu was an important place in history and was known as a temple town. Kurgodu was declared as a taluk headquarters and all important government offices had been functioning there besides being an Assembly constituency for the past five decades. Such being the case, shifting the constituency to Kampli would be unfair, they said. Mr. Suryanarayan Reddy expressed his support to the samiti and said that he would abide by the decisions taken by it. The samiti leaders said their agitation was limited to the shifting of the constituency from Kurgodu to Kampli and was not against the reservation of constituencies announced by the commission. (Seven of the nine constituencies have been declared reserved five for Scheduled Castes and two each for Scheduled Tribes and General candidates).
