Excise collection exceeds target

Yields Rs. 556 crore as against 517 crore last year

PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry Central Excise Commissionerate has collected an amount of Rs. 556.27 crores in 2005-06 against the target of Rs. 540 crore. The collection is much above last year's sum of Rs. 516.96 crores.

The Commissionerate covers the Pondicherry region, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai and a part of Kanchipuram district.

A release from the office said in the service tax front, it has collected Rs. 43 crores as against the target of Rs. 45 crores. About Rs. 2 crores due during the month of March 2006 are paid by assesses during April 2006. The service tax collection is Rs. 15 crores more than last year's collection, in spite of the fact that a large number of assesses have availed the threshold exemption in 2005-06.

A special drive against travel agents, mandap keepers, cable T.V. operators and advertising agents are continuing and other government departments like RTO's, postal departments and municipal administration had been addressed in this regard. These efforts would increase service tax revenue during the current year, the release further said.

Special drive

The release added that it had conducted a special drive to unearth excise duty and service tax evasion. Cases have been booked against some of the iron-steel and air conditioner manufacturers.

In this regard a case has also been registered against a leading manufacturer of branded leather goods in Pondicherry for excise duty evasion.
