Police custody for four in murder case

ANANTAPUR: The Junior Civil Judge Court of Tadipatri on Thursday granted three days custody of four surrendered suspects in TDP leader K. Suryapratap Reddy's murder case to the police from April 28.

Judge P. Venugopala Rao directed the police not to use force against the suspects and also not to put pressure on them to own up the responsibility for the crime. The four suspects - B. Pratapa Reddy, B. Nageshwar Reddy, S. Lokeshawar Reddy and K. Maheshwar Reddy - would be handed over to the police on Friday morning after a medical check-up. - Staff Reporter

Undertrial escapes from hospital

NALGONDA: Venkateswarlu, 34, an undertrial and ousted constable of the 12th battalion, escaped from the district headquarters hospital by hoodwinking two armed reserved constables on guard on Thursday.

According to the II Town Sub-Inspector E. Sreenivasa Reddy, the accused person sought the permission of the guards to answer a call of nature and did not return. The police launched a manhunt to nab him. - Staff Reporter

SI held on graft charge

ELURU: N. Sambhasiva, Sub-Inspector of Penugonda police station, was arrested by Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths on Thursday on graft charge.

According to information, a team of ACB personnel led by DSP Y. Markhendeyulu laid a trap and caught the SI allegedly while accepting a bribe of Rs. 2,000 from a taxi driver Shaik Usman in lieu of a favour in a case of assault. - Staff Reporter

Maoists `kill' villager

VISAKHAPATNAM: The body of B. Rama Rao, 26, allegedly killed by Maoists branding him a police informer, was found at Valasaballem village under the Neelakanthapuram police station limits in Parvathipuram of Vizianagaram district on Thursday. - Special Correspondent

Driver electrocuted

Srikakulam: Duba Baliji Babu, 33, a jeep driver, was electrocuted when he came in contact with a live wire on the road near Guravam village in Rajam mandal on Thursday. According to information reaching here, an autorickshaw hit a pole resulting in injuries to two persons. While trying to help the injured, Babu came in contact with the live wire. - Special Correspondent

DRDO employees' strike continues

HYDERABAD: DRDO employees' unions, affiliated to the All-India Defence Employees Federation, began a five-day relay hunger strike on April 24 to press their charter of demands.

The fourth day's hunger strike was inaugurated by T. Satyanarayana, chairman, Confederation of All-India Central Government Employees and Workers. - Special Correspondent

Keshava Rao lashes out at Advani

HYDERABAD: PCC president K. Keshava Rao has lashed out at BJP leader L.K. Advani for giving a call in favour of separate Telangana when he had actually opposed the move in the past.

KURNOOL: Movie scriptwriter Madhukar asked the supporters of All India Students Association (AISF) to campaign for removing superstitions from society. Addressing a meeting of AISF here on Thursday, he said superstitions were playing a major role in rural society even now.

Student killed in road accident

ANANTAPUR: The annual day function of Kendriya Vidyalaya located on the campus of Sri Krishnadevaraya University near here proved final day in his life for one Sai Charan (6), a first standard student, as he was run over by a when he was crossing the road along with his mother.

According to the police, Sai Charan took his mother for the annual day function in his school. After alighting an autorickshaw the boy and his mother were crossing the road to enter the school premises, when a jeep passing at a high speed ran over him. The boy died instantaneously.

Service tax on BSNL products

TIRUPATI: The BSNL Tirupati has said that the service tax and education cess have been revised from 10.2 per cent to 12.24 per cent with effect from Apr 18 on its basic phone services, cellular/WLL services and STD PTs as per the Finance Act 2006.

The unit call charge of India Telephone Card would be Re.1 per MCU with effect from May 1, but the talk value of BSNL Excel recharge coupons and top-up coupons would remain unchanged, according to a release.

Yanam Independent candidate attacked

Kakinada: Raksha Hari Krishna, who is in the election fray as an Independent candidate for Yanam constituency of Pondicherry Assembly, was injured when he was attacked near ceramic factory centre while returning home after campaigning on Wednesday night. He was examined at the government general hospital here on Thursday. He was found to have injuries in the jaw. Dentists removed the damaged teeth by performing a minor surgery. Mr. Krishna alleged the involvement of sitting MLA Krishnarao . — Correspondent

Bihar Minister to visit Kakinada

Kakinada: Bihar Minister of State for Food and Commerce Ms. Suchitra Sinha will be touring East Godavari district for three days, commencing from April 29. She will be reaching Visakhapatnam from Hyderabad by Sahara Airlines flight at 12.40 p.m. on Saturday and from there to Kakinada by road at 6.50 p.m. She will be holding discussions with the district officials on matters relating to civil supplies at 7.00 p.m. on the same day. She will be attending various programmes locally arranged on April 30 and leave for Visakhapatnam by road on May 1. — Correspondent

Film producer bereaved

Kakinada: Konda Sarada Kumari, 79, mother of Konda Krishnam Raju, producer of latest movie Bhakta Ramdass has died of prolonged illness at a private nursing home here in the early hours of Thursday. She leaves behind a son and daughter. Several prominent personalities called on Krishnamraju and conveyed their condolences. — Correspondent

Collector for speedy rehabilitation

Kakinada: East Godavari Collector Praveen Prakash has asked officials and engineers to expedite the construction of houses as part of the rehabilitation package to the displaced under Musurumilli and Bhupathipalem irrigation projects. Prisoner dies

Rajahmundry: Nakka Venkataramana, 32, who is under trail in Rajahmundry Central Prison, died here on Thursday.

According to hospital sources, the deceased was brought to hospital on April 24 with stomach-ache and chest pain. He died today after brief treatment. — Staff Reporter

RI in bribery case

HYDERABAD: A special court at Vijayawada has sentenced a former personnel officer of the Guntur Corporation Bank, S. Gowri Shankar, to undergo two-year rigorous imprisonment, as he was found guilty in a corruption case registered against him seven years ago. Anti-Corruption Bureau officials caught the personnel officer on January 10, 1999 when he allegedly received Rs. 10,000 bribe from a complainant, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter
