Main accused in Meerut fair fire case arrested

Two other organisers of the Brand India Show still absconding

Meerut: The main accused in the Victoria Park fire case here, which had claimed at least 50 lives, was on Thursday arrested, a top police official said.

``Lakhan Tomar, one of three managers of the Brand India Consumer Show, held here on April 10, has been arrested,'' Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Bua Singh told reporters here.

At least 50 people had been charred to death and more than 100 injured in the devastating fire that had ravaged the consumer goods fair here.

The State Government had later ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

In Lucknow, State Principal Secretary (Home) S K Agarwal said Tomar was arrested from Modinagar in Meerut district.

Two other organisers of the fair -- Sidharth Kochar and Amit Gupta -- were absconding, he said.

Tomar was later produced before a local court which remanded him to 14 days judicial custody.

Earlier talking to reporters, Tomar claimed that he came to surrender and accordingly police arrested him. -- PTI
