Lucknow: Apparently irked over the failure of the police to nab the prime suspect in the Mehar Bhargava murder case, Uttar Pradesh Governor T V Rajeswar has written a letter to Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav asking him to recommend a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. In his letter to the Chief Minister, the Governor referred to the memoranda submitted to him by various political parties demanding a CBI inquiry into the killing, informed sources said here on Thursday. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati and Congress leaders Ashok Gehlot, Pramod Tewari and Salman Khursheed have also demanded a CBI probe into the killing, Mr. Rajeswar said in his letter. It was unfortunate that the prime accused in the killing, Sachin Pahari, was still absconding, the Governor stated. Keeping all these factors in mind it is my suggestion that you should consider recommending a CBI inquiry into the killing, the Governor said. On the other hand, the police maintained that there was not much left to be work out in the case barring the arrest of Pahari. Sources said that the eye witnesses had identified the alleged killer Amit Singh, who was currently lodged in jail. Mr. Yadav had earlier said that there was no need for a CBI probe and that the special task force, which was assisting in the investigating, was capable of working out the case. Mehar Bhargava, wife of senior Congress leader Luv Bhargava, was shot at on February 28 near her house in the heart of the city and had succumbed to her injuries a few days later while she was under treatment in a Delhi hospital. She was fired at by a gang of youngsters after she objected to their passing lewd remarks about her daughter-in-law. -- PTI
