Chennai: From a personal mass contact programme, election campaign is also taking a turn to use the other modes. There appears to be a surge in the Short Messaging Service (SMS) of campaign material, particularly from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Some of the messages highlight the manifesto promises of the DMK, mainly the offer of colour television sets and rice at Rs. 2 per kg through the Public Distribution System. Others carry slogans such as "Vetri namadhey." These messages come to known and unknown people, besides getting forwarded to several others.
