PONDICHERRY: Thirty-eight cartons of Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) were seized from the house of a political functionary at Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Veerampattinam on Friday. The house owner Padmanabhan, who is a supporter of a candidate in Ariankuppam, was arrested for storing the bottles without having license. When asked the District Collector, G. Theva Neethi Dhas, said the liquor was supplied allegedly to induce the voters. He did not divulge the name of the candidate. Acting on a tip-off that liquor bottles were given to fishermen in Veerampattinam a team led by Yesvanthaiyah, Tahisldar, Pondicherry region raided the place and seized the bottles with the assistance of Excise Department. The bottles, manufactured in a local distillery, were worth around Rs. 32,000. The special squads formed to monitor the implementation of model code is now keeping an eye on some of the industrial estates, community halls, godowns and mandapams to find out whether these places are used to store materials. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard as per the request from the Election Department is closely monitoring the coastline to check supply of any materials to voters through sea route.
