COMMENCING CAMPAIGN: Pondicherry PCC leader P. Shanmugham and Communist Party India nominee R. Viswanathan coming out after offering prayers at Amman temple in Pudupet on Friday.
Pondicherry: Senior Congress leader and former Pondicherry Chief Minister P. Shanmugham began his campaign tour seeking people's support to the candidates sponsored by the Congress or its alliance partners. The octogenarian leader, however, is not contesting the polls. He has already done the campaign work in some parts of Cassicade constituency where the Pondicherry State INTUC leader G. Ravichandran is contesting. This is the first poll battle for Mr. Ravichandran, who is pitted against the Puduchery Munnetra Congress nominee and former Education Minister K. Lakshminarayanan. Mr. Shanmugham commenced his campaigning in the Reddiarpalayam constituency after worshipping at an Amman temple in Pudupet. He sought people's support for the CPI nominee and former Agriculture Minister R. Viswanathan. The CPI candidate is pitted against the AIADMK candidate and MLA A. M. Krishnamoorthy at Reddiarpalayam. He contested the seat successfully in the 2001 polls as a Bharatiya Janata Party nominee. However, Mr. Krishnamoorthy quit the BJP on March 9 and joined the AIADMK.
