U.S. declares JUD, IKK as terrorist organisations

NEW DELHI: The United States on Friday two declared two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) renamed outfits, Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JUD) and Idara Khidmat-e-Khaq (IKK), operating in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of India, as global terrorist organisations.

The State Department blocked all property, interest in property of these two outfits that are in the United States, or come within the U.S. or under the control of U.S. persons, the U.S. Public Affairs Office said in a statement.

It said the Secretary of State took this action in consultation with the Attorney-General, the Secretary of the Treasury, and the Department of Homeland Security.

The LeT, it said, was one of the three largest and best trained groups fighting in Kashmir against India. After the Secretary of State's designation of LeT as a terrorist organisation in 2001 and the Pakistani Government banning the group, LeT renamed itself JUD in order to evade sanctions.

"The JUD established IKK as a public welfare organisation that it utilises to collect funds and undertake other activities. LeT has been sanctioned by the United Nations 1267 Committee for its association with Al-Qaeda," the statement said.
