A MILESTONE: Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of the Kodagu District Journalists' Association in Madikeri on Friday.
Madikeri: Minister for Science and Technology and Kodagu district in-charge Ramachandra Gowda on Friday urged newspapers to stop what he called "cut-throat competition" among themselves and instead work for the welfare of society. Inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of the Kodagu District Journalists' Association (KDJA) here, Mr. Gowda said newspapers should not convey wrong signals to society but involve themselves in a healthy competition. He lauded the print media for successfully withstanding the competition from the electronic media. The Fourth Estate had remained active since it took up fight against the British, he said. At the same time, it had grown. As against 44 English and 170 language newspapers during 1947, there were 209 English and 2647 language newspapers in the country, apart from periodicals, Mr. Gowda said. President of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists Venkatesh said the KUWJ would urge the Government to reserve a seat for journalists in the Legislative Council. He requested the Government to earmark advertisements to medium and small newspapers in districts to survive competitions in the presence of large newspapers. Mr. Venkatesh thanked the Government for increasing the pension to select journalists to Rs. 1,000, earmarking a sum of Rs.50 lakh for the corpus fund. President of the KDJA K.K. Shashidhar presided. Meenakshi Madhur Shetty, wife of the first president of the KDJA the late Madhur Shetty, G. Rajendra, U.M. Poovaiah, V.P. Suresh, B.G. Anantashayana, T.P. Ramesh and Addanda C. Cariappa were felicitated. President of the zilla panchayat H.S. Ashok, G. Rajendra, member, Karnataka Madhyama Academy, and T.P. Ramesh, Managing Trustee of the Kodagu Patrika Bhavan Trust, spoke. President of the press club H.T. Anil, G.J. Vinaya Kumar, planter, were present. H.M. Annappa, Adviser, KDJA, gave an account of the KDJA since its inception 25 years ago.
