NEW SERVICE: The KSRTC buses that have been operating on city routes in Shimoga.
SHIMOGA: The services of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) city buses for the last four days seem to have evoked a good response from commuters. Eight buses have been pressed into service plying on the eight routes, which were hitherto being served by private operators. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy flagged off the services on Sunday The KSRTC is prepared to spare more buses if the Regional Transport Authority gives permits taking into consideration the increasing demand for them, KSRTC Depot Manager Srikanth said. People feel that there was no comparison between private buses and the KSRTC buses. Some of the private buses which were not roadworthy used to ply in the city, they said. It was the road accident involving a private bus in Vinobanagar recently in which a young motorcyclist was knocked down fatally that prompted the district administration to have a close look at the running condition of nearly 60 private buses. The private bus which caused death of the youth was reportedly operating without a fitness certificate. Following the outcry over the poor service by the private bus operators, Deputy Commissioner T.K. Anil Kumar took the initiative for the introduction of the KSRTC buses in the city.
