Pension scheme for first class players

Special Correspondent

Mumbai: Cricketers who have played in the Ranji and Duleep Trophy, Irani Cup and first class matches against foreign teams will receive a monthly pension from April 2006. As a follow-up to the BCCI working committee's directive, the finance committee, which met here on Friday formulated a three-tier scheme for first class players who have not played Test and one-day internationals.

Those who had played 76 matches and more before the 2003-04 season will receive Rs. 15,000 per month and those who had played between 50 and 75 will receive Rs. 10,000 per month. The pension scheme for Test and first class cricketers, umpires will entail a disbursement of Rs. 10 crores every year.

The Ranji Trophy was played as a knockout until the 1957-58 season. The BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said: "Those who have played ten matches and more before the 1958-59 season will also receive a pension of Rs. 10,000.''

The BCCI has also decided to pay the balance amount, aggregating around Rs. 15 crores to first class cricketers who played in the 2004-05 season. Thirteen per cent of the gross revenue of the BCCI is given to first class cricketers. "We have already paid Rs. 16,000 (Rs. 4000 per day). The balance works out to Rs. 48,000 per player. So the total works out to Rs. 64,000 per match. For the fiscal 2006, each player is likely to receive around Rs. one lakh per match,'' said a BCCI official.

TV subsidy

The finance committee has also arrived at a figure of Rs. 8 crores as television subsidy for each member of the BCCI for the year 2005-06. The state associations will be allowed to claim Rs. 4 crores from next week, but after submitting the audited statement of accounts for the year 2004-05.

The balance amount, which could be a little more than Rs. 4 crores, after the 2005-06 accounts are audited, will be given after the associations submit the audited statement of accounts for March 2006.

The BCCI vice-president Shashank Manohar said the report of the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) will be finalised on Saturday and the date for the special general body meeting will be announced after consulting the BCCI president, Sharad Pawar
