Brabourne to be spruced up for Champions Trophy

Special Correspondent

Mumbai: The Cricket Club of India's Brabourne Stadium will play host tobig cricket this October-November. The stadium will host four preliminary league matches and the final of the Champions Trophy 2006.

The CCI president, Raj Singh Dungarpur said it is a "dream come true'' for himself, the club's executive committee and its 8000 members.

"The Club's committee has decided to spend Rs. 6 crores for upgrading the facilities, including installing floodlights for the event. The ICC officials whom I met in New Delhi yesterday told me that the Brabourne Stadium looks impeccable and very little has to be done.''

The Brabourne Stadium has been awarded matches featuring West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the final.

According to Mr. Dungarpur, Dev-Mesco, which has put up lights at Mohali, Motera and in Orissa has been given the contract to install lights at the CCI.

Last week, the ICC officials visited the Club and were very impressed. "The ICC's pitch consultant, Andy Atkinson said the pitch and ground are a beauty. The CCI would not be turning a new page, but writing a new chapter,'' said Mr. Dungarpur.

It's the parting monsoon which Mr. Dungarpur fears may play spoilsport. "But we will be equipped to deal with it. It rained the night before the one-dayer between the West Indies and South Africa. But then Mumbaites saw a great fielding effort by Rhodes and a fine match.''
