Bangalore: Tamil Nadu's Murtaza Lohani and Janani Suresh bagged the boys and girls' under-16 singles titles respectively in the AITA Talent Series tournament that concluded at the Kims Academy Courts here on Friday morning. Murtaza defeated local favourite Rashein Samuel 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, while Janani defeated her State-mate J. Kesika 6-4, 6-3. Janani made it a grand double as she had earlier combined with Kesika to win the doubles title. The duo defeated Karnataka's Nitha and Alisha Punja 6-3, 6-4. Earlier, Karnataka's Sharan Patil and Ravina Shetty won the under-14 boys and girls' titles respectively. In the under-16 finals, Murtaza had to contend with a battling Rashein Samuel. Murtaza, with his height advantage had a better reach and with probing backhands and some good serve and volley upset Rashein's gameplan. Rashein did come back in the second set but failed to survive in the decisive third set. Meanwhile Janani was in control of her match against Kesika though she did falter in the odd long rally.
The results (all finals): Boys: Under-16 singles: Murtaza Lohani (TN) bt Rashein Samuel (Kar) 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Under-14 singles: Sharan Patil (Kar) bt Rashein Samuel 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Girls: Under-16 singles: Janani Suresh (TN) bt J. Kesika (TN) 6-4, 6-3. Doubles: Janani/Kesika bt Nitha/Alisha Punja (Kar) 6-3, 6-4. Under-14 singles: Ravina Shetty (Kar) bt Soujanya (AP) 7-6(4), 6-2.
